ADHD assessment

Is it ADHD, or is itsomething else?

Dr Zahraa Hussein runs structured ADHD assessments here at the clinic, so families in the Upper Hunter do not have to travel to Newcastle or the Central Coast for one. It is a longer, dedicated appointment — not a standard GP consult — booked and billed separately.

Dr Zahraa HusseinGeneral Practitioner

01A long first appointmentHow things are now, what school was like, and what it is costing you. There is no test to pass.
02Gathering the pictureQuestionnaires, school reports, earlier letters, or someone who has known you a long time. We tell you exactly what to bring.
03Coming back togetherWe go through what the information shows, what fits, what does not, and what happens next — whatever the answer is.

Privately billed. ADHD assessment is not bulk billed, because it runs across several long appointments rather than one. You are quoted before you begin and pay on the day, and a Medicare rebate may apply to part of it. Ask reception about fees

An assessment does not always end in an ADHD diagnosis. Where something else better explains what you are experiencing, Dr Zahraa will tell you and help you work out what comes next.

Bulk billed

Noticed a spotthat has changed?

Get it looked at. A skin check with one of our GPs is bulk billed for anyone with a valid Medicare card — and if the spot needs testing, the biopsy is bulk billed too for pension and concession card holders.

Skin checkBulk billed with a valid Medicare card. A GP looks at the spot you are worried about, or goes over your skin properly, using a dermatoscope.
Skin biopsyBulk billed for pension and concession card holders. Taken here in our treatment room and sent to pathology — if you do not hold a card, reception explains any cost first.

If any of these sound familiar, book a check

a spot is new, or changing in size, shape or colour

Change is the single most useful thing to notice, and you do not need to know what it means — that is our job. If you are unsure whether something has changed, photograph it beside something for scale and look again in a month.

something bleeds, itches, or will not heal

A sore that scabs and reopens, or that has not healed in about four weeks, is worth showing us sooner rather than waiting for a routine check.

you have had a skin cancer before, or melanoma runs in the family

Having had one skin cancer makes another more likely, and melanoma in a parent, sibling or child raises your risk too. Tell us about both — it changes how often we suggest you come in.

years of outdoor work, or skin that burns easily

It is cumulative sun exposure that matters most, so trades, farming, mining and years of outdoor sport all count — including the sun you got decades ago. Fair skin that burns before it tans adds to it.

you are simply not sure

That is reason enough to book. Nobody minds you bringing in something that turns out to be harmless — that is exactly what the appointment is for.

What to look for — the ABCDE guide

A skin check is not a screening program, and no examination finds everything. Australian guidelines recommend checks based on your own risk rather than a set schedule for everyone, so your GP will talk with you about what makes sense in your case. Bring your Medicare card, and your pension or concession card if you have one.
