The right dressingmatters less than the review.

Ring us the same day ifThe wound becomes more painful after the first couple of days, the redness spreads, there is pus or a bad smell, you develop a fever, or the area goes numb or cold. Any wound below the ankle in someone with diabetes needs prompt attention.

There are dozens of dressing products and the choice does matter — but what matters more is that someone experienced looks at the wound regularly and changes the plan when it is not progressing. That is what a series of appointments buys you.

How often will I need to come?

It depends on the wound. Some need daily attention at first, most settle into every few days. It is booked as a series so you are not ringing each time.

Can I shower?

Usually, with the dressing protected. You will get specific instructions for your wound rather than a general rule.

What does it cost?

The consultation is bulk billed with a valid Medicare card. Some dressing products carry a cost — reception will tell you first.

Can I have the same nurse?

Where possible, and it is worth asking for. Continuity matters a lot with wounds because change is easier to spot.

What if it gets worse between visits?

Ring us. Do not wait for the next booked appointment.

Do you do compression bandaging?

For leg ulcers where it is appropriate, yes — after checking the circulation first, which is an important step.

Do I need a referral?

No. Book directly with us.

Can you remove stitches put in elsewhere?

Yes. Bring any paperwork you were given, including when they are due out.

Is my tetanus up to date?

We check this with any wound. It is easy to overlook and simple to fix.

Do you dress wounds for aged care residents?

Ask reception about arrangements — it depends on the facility and the situation.

How long will it take to heal?

It depends on the wound, your circulation, and conditions like diabetes. We will give you a realistic expectation rather than a guess.

Can I keep using my own dressings?

Bring them in and we will tell you whether they suit the wound at this stage. Dressing needs change as healing progresses.

What if I am on blood thinners?

Tell us. It affects bleeding and sometimes the dressing choice, but it rarely prevents anything.

Is scarring avoidable?

Not entirely, but good wound care genuinely improves the result, particularly keeping it moist and protected from the sun afterwards.
